Jolie and Pitt give to Darfur groups

Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are giving a helping hand to refugees in Africa. Jolie, who is a UN goodwill ambassador, and Pitt donated $1 million to help humanitarian efforts in Sudan's Darfur region.
"This generous donation comes just months after Angelina Jolie made a personal visit to a refugee camp in Chad and it shows, once again, her and Brad Pitts' commitment to helping refugees and the displaced," said Michel Gabaudan, a representative for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) agency in a statement.
The donation from the Jolie-Pitt Foundation will go to three agencies playing key roles in Darfur and neighboring Chad - the UNHCR, the International Rescue Committee, and an international non-governmental organization, SOS Children's Villages - said the refugee agency.

Jolie, the UN Refugee Agency's goodwill ambassador since early 2001, met Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz for talks, the foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Angelina Jolie, who was accompanied by officials of UNHCR, visited an Afghan Refugees Camp at Kacha Ghari, near Peshawar on Thursday.
Jolie is due to meet still more Afghan refugees during the remainder of her stay in Pakistan.
In 2003, she was presented with an award for her humanitarian work, which has taken her to dozens of countries around the world. After a visit to Cambodia in 2001, she adopted her son Maddox.
A year later on a trip to Thailand, she said that her heart was with refugees rather than the Hollywood film industry.
Pakistan has hosted refugees from war-torn Afghanistan since the Soviet invasion of the country in 1979. While more than three million remain in the country, 2.3m have since been repatriated to Pakistan's westerly neighbour.
Angelina Jolie is an amazing philanthropist. She is almost more famous for her social activism than for her movies. In 2001 she was filming a movie in Cambodia and first came face to face with the plight of refugees. She immediately took steps to adopt a refugee, her son, later known as Maddox. This "felt so right," she was quoted as saying and thus set a new course for Angelina. A course that would take her to the far and forgotten corners of the globe where her star power would shine and attract attention to millions of refugees and the vast injustices being heaped upon them.

Angelina quickly contacted the United Nations to ask what she could do to help. The U. N. soon announced that they were naming Angelina a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Since then she has worked at a whirlwind pace. In her tenure as ambassador she has toured UNHCR refugee operations in the Balkans, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Tanzania, Kenya, Cambodia, Thailand, and Pakistan and Ecuador. Due to the fact that the press clamors to follow her wherever she goes, she has helped turn attention to the horrendous living conditions of the nearly 35 million refugees there, half of which are children.

Angelina has also been a champion of the cause to rid the world of the menace of land mines. On a recent trip she was even able to personally detonate a land mine that was placed near a place where many children play. Angelina was first made aware of the problem of land mines while filming a movie in Cambodia. She says she was shocked to see so many people with missing limbs due to land mines and so she set out to do something. Following in the footsteps of Princess Diana, Angelina has been a figure head and has garnered much attention for many different organizations such as the Adopt a Minefield organization and International Campaign to Ban Land Mines.

And not only has Angelina donated her time to these causes, but she has also donated several million dollars to many different causes. She is truly a celebrity that is to be looked up to and emulated. Thank you Angelina Jolie!

Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie applauds courage of refugees in India

NEW DELHI, India, November 6 (UNHCR) – On a weekend visit to refugees, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie met Afghan and Burmese women who told her how they fled persecution in their homelands and found safety in India.

Relaxed and informal, dressed in jeans and a UNHCR tee shirt, Jolie also sat down on the floor to play with refugee children, commiserated with a hard-working single mother and chatted with teenagers about the joys and challenges of learning a foreign language.

"I am grateful to the refugee families who spent time with me and shared their stories," Jolie said. "They are remarkable, courageous people."

On Saturday, the actress visited the UNHCR Women's Protection Clinic in west Delhi, a place where refugee women from Myanmar can come and air their problems in a safe environment.

Interviews at the clinic also enable UNHCR to better help the women – by getting them medical care, or arranging education for their children, for example. Longer term, many of the women are scheduled to be resettled in countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway and the United States. Many of the refugees are from the Chin minority, Christians in officially-Buddhist Myanmar.

Writing notes in a thick notebook, Jolie listened attentively as Burmese refugee women told her that they cannot return to their country as long as the military regime remains in power. While she talked to the refugees, her five-year-old son Maddox played on the floor with Burmese children, overcoming any language barrier with an enthusiastic contest of spinning tops.

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie, on a two-day visit to New Delhi, visited a refugee woman from Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) in the one-room home she shares with her three children. The woman, one of the 1,750 refugees from Myanmar under the care of UNHCR in India, told Jolie they fled after her husband was arrested by Burma’s military government.
"It's very upsetting to hear about the persecution the refugees have endured," Jolie said. After a conversation with two Burmese women, one shyly told Jolie: "You look like an actress." Added the second one: "Are you a film star?"

"That's why I am in India, making a film," Jolie replied, "but I came up to Delhi just to visit with you. I am honoured to be able to meet you. You are very strong women. You are amazing."

The Afghan and Burmese women she met were among the 11,500 refugees in the Indian capital who are directly under the care of the UN refugee agency.

In the crowded narrow streets near the centre, Jolie slipped off her flip-flops and settled down on the wooden bed in a one-room apartment her Burmese refugee host shares with her three children. The woman, whose husband was arrested in Burma, fled to India alone with her young children. She cannot work here, she said, because she has her hands full taking care of the children, two of whom were at her side as she talked.

"That's the hardest work," said Jolie, who has three children of her own. "It must be very difficult for you to raise three small children in a foreign country."

Jolie also visited Khalsa Diwan Welfare Society, an organisation run by and for Sikh Afghan refugees in west Delhi, where she dropped in on tailoring, music and English classes. Many of the Afghan Sikhs, who were a persecuted minority in their own country, have been in India for nearly three decades; most of the young refugees Jolie met were born in India and have never seen Afghanistan.

Chatting with a 15-year-old boy who said he loves computers, Jolie joked: "I am terrible with computers." In an English class, Jolie, who said she has a special interest in Afghan refugees and would like to visit the country one day when it is peaceful, asked the students to teach her a few words in their mother tongue and praised their command of three languages.

Later she said it was tragic these Afghan refugees – who number 9,500 in New Delhi – had languished in exile for so many years. "We often focus on refugee emergencies, but we forget that there are millions of refugees around the world who spend years, even decades, outside their countries," she said. "The international community really must work harder to find solutions for these forgotten urban refugees."

On Sunday, Jolie met Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma, and also prominent members of Indian civil society, including academics and lawyers. She thanked both the people and government of India for "their longstanding hospitality to refugees" and for an "open-door policy" to refugees displaced by recent fighting in Sri Lanka.

In addition to the 11,500 refugees cared for by the UN refugee agency directly, India is also home to about 110,000 Tibetan refugees and more than 100,000 refugees from Sri Lanka who are looked after by the Indian government. Since violence flared on the island state in April this year, more than 18,000 Sri Lankans have sought refuge in southern India's Tamil Nadu state.

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie’s five-year-old son Maddox (right, in blue UNHCR cap), joined her on a two-day visit to New Delhi. At a protection center for refugee women from Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), Maddox played enthusiastically with Burmese refugee children. A minority group in India, these Burmese children immediately noticed their resemblance to Maddox, who was adopted from Cambodia.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie pledge millions in charity

Celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have pledged 2 million dollars to humanitarian organisations Global Action for Children and Medicins sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders, to help families affected by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty.

"In the most troubled parts of the world-places that much of the world has abandoned, MSF is always there. I have seen these brave men and women working in war zones and horrific conditions and I deeply admire them," Eonline! quoted Jolie as saying in a statement.

In a separate statement, issued by Jennifer Delaney, the US director for Global Action For Children, she expressed her gratitude for the couple's latest gesture.

"Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt not only care, but more important, are taking concrete action to address the fact that there will be 20 million children orphaned by AIDS by 2010, and millions more orphaned by tuberculosis, malaria and conflict or whose parents are sick and dying," Jennifer said.

Jolie and Pitt are no strangers to charity, they have travelled together to Pakistan, among other countries, as part of Jolie's work as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commission for Refugees.

After staying in Namibia for several months, awaiting the birth of their first child together, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, the couple donated 300,000 dollars to the African country's state hospitals to buy maternity ward supplies and equipment. They also donated the entire 4.1 million dollars they got for the first pictures of Shiloh.

Last year the 'Tomb Raider' actress also contributed 500,000 dollars toward the opening of the National Center for Refugee and Immigrant Children in Washington D.C. and pledged up to 5 million dollars over the next 15 years to set up a wildlife refuge in her son Maddox's native home of Cambodia.

Since becoming a Hollywood couple, however, Brad and Angelina have spent a huge part of their time outside the U.S., bringing attention to poverty-stricken and war-torn regions.

In early 2001, Angelina Jolie approached the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) asking how she could help refugees. She wanted to learn more about humanitarian field operations. Shortly after spending a day in briefings with UNHCR in Washington DC, she was on her way to Ivory Coast, Tanzania and Sierra Leone, where she spent several weeks meeting refugees and working with UNHCR field staff.

During the summer of 2001 she travelled with UNHCR through Cambodia (July) and later spent a week with Afghan refugees in Pakistan (August). On August 27, Jolie was named UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, accepting the responsibility of meeting with and advocating for the protection of refugees on five continents.

For over five years, Jolie has travelled with UNHCR to remote and desolate regions, meeting refugees and field workers in some 20 countries and regions including Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Pakistan, Cambodia, Thailand, Ecuador, Kenya, Namibia, Kosovo, Sri Lanka, the Russian Federation, Jordan, Egypt, Chad, Sudan’s Darfur region, Lebanon and India.

She has kept journals during several of her missions. Journals of her first four missions were published two years ago in a book, “Notes from My Travels, Visits with Refugees in Africa, Cambodia, Pakistan and Ecuador” (October 2003, Simon and Schuster).

Her more recent field visit journals are published on UNHCR’s international website (www.unhcr.org/goodwill).
