Church joins One path to aid poor

During morning services at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Glenwood yesterday, parishioners received a new accessory: white plastic bracelets inscribed with the word "One."
<br />

Like the yellow cancer-awareness bracelets popularized by bicyclist Lance Armstrong, the white bracelets are a marketing device. They are symbolic of the One Campaign, an effort to end global poverty that's spearheaded by Bono, frontman of the rock band U2.<br />
In addition to ending extreme poverty, the campaign has adopted the Millennium Development Goals, a blueprint established by the United Nations for improving the lives of people in developing countries by 2015. The goals, which have been endorsed by 190 countries including the United States, also include halting the spread of HIV/AIDS, empowering women, providing universal primary education and reducing child mortality.<br />
"We as Christians need to think of other ways to make a difference," Thomas Hart, an Episcopalian and spokesman for the One Campaign, told St. Andrew's parishioners in a presentation after the morning service. "The policies that our government adopts can really help."<br />

Bono    for NERCHA

WORLD famous Irish rock star and U2 lead singer Bono has donated more than E35 million (US$5m) to the National Emergency Council on HIV and AIDS (NERCHA) through his philanthrophic initiative (Product) RED.

NERCHA Director Derek von Wissell yesterday told The Swazi Observer that the funds generated through (Product) Red were administered by the Global Fund, adding that Swaziland and Rwanda were chosen by the latter to be the first showcase countries to receive the financial assistance from the Bono-led initiative.<br />

von Wissell explained that Swaziland was chosen as a ‘showcase country,’ by Global Fund, because of its strong track record within the Global Fund’s performance-based model of grant evaluation.<br />
“Income generated by (RED) products will support Global Fund-financed programmes that positively impact the lives of women and children affected by HIV and AIDS in Africa. Swaziland and Rwanda were chosen as the first countries receiving Global Fund grants that will benefit from income generated by (RED). While RED funds are not additional to the grants already approved by the Global Fund Board, (RED) income will replace resources earmarked for these grants in the Global Fund “pot”, freeing up these resources for other grant renewals or future funding rounds,” he said.<br />

Bono targets HIV in Africa with licensing deals

His Product Red joins with companies to market to 'conscience consumers.' The proceeds go to combat AIDS and its effects.
The donation agreements, which typically run for several years, are negotiated separately with each partner. American Express, for example, donates at least 1% of what consumers spend using its Red credit card. Gap hands over half the profit from its Red clothes. Red has to balance maximizing donations with allowing its partners enough profit to make it worthwhile. To prevent the brand from being diluted, only one company in each sector (clothing lines, cellphones, credit cards) is allowed to use the Red brand.

For all its fanfare, Red's model of tying a good cause to a product, known in the business as "cause-related marketing," is fairly familiar.
"It looks as much of a mind-set as a demographic," said John Hayes, American Express' chief marketing officer. And because it is a growing one, "if we don't go and salute those people with a product meeting their needs, someone else probably will."

New medium is Bono's message

Today Bono is as well known for his political activism as for his songs, and he uses the concerts to encourage his fans to support his favourite charities. He mixes his political evangelism with the concert performances to such an extent that they almost become interchangeable. Consequently, technology is to the fore in spreading his message.
Mobile phones beeped all around the stadium with a personal SMS from Bono entreating them to visit the global action event of the moment, www.makepovertyhistory.com.au

This site was set up to promote an event claimed to be the biggest anti-poverty rally ever. It took place the following week in Melbourne, under the banner of Make Poverty History.

In a guest commentary in the German mass-circulation daily Bild, Irishman Bob Geldof said 2007 will be an important year for Germany.
"Let us hope and pray that Germany and its chancellor, Ms. Merkel, will at last get politicians to act," Geldof said in Bild's Tuesday edition.
Irish rocker Bono has also been courting Germany to help Africa. He and German Chancellor Angela Merkel exchanged a much-publicized embrace at the Davos global economic summit a year ago.
Bono has urged wealthy nations in the past to grant debt relief to poorer nations.
According to the Financial Times (FT), Bono's London-based campaign group called "Data" plans to set up an office in Berlin next month along with Geldof.

Bono to Receive Honorary Knighthood

DUBLIN, Ireland — Irish rocker and humanitarian Bono will become a knight of the British empire — but the U2 frontman won't be called "Sir."<br>
<br>
Britain confirmed Saturday Bono will receive his honorary knighthood from the British ambassador to Ireland, David Reddaway, in a Dublin ceremony shortly after New Year's Day.<br>
In a letter to Bono released Saturday, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said the singer's lobbying had forced wealthy nations to focus on increasing aid to Africa.<br>
<br>
"I know from talking to you how much these causes matter to you," Blair wrote. "I know as well how knowledgeable you are about the problems we face and how determined you are to do all you can to help overcome them. You have tirelessly used your voice to speak up for Africa."<br>
<br>
Blair said he hoped to keep working with Bono "to work together to maintain momentum on Africa, and ensure leaders around the world meet the promises they have made."

BONO BOOKMARKS

                By Brian Williams
NEW YORK - We are just back from a whirlwind tour of three nations in Africa. In Africa, the tour continued Wednesday, where we left the Irish rock star-turned-humanitarian Bono.

The man from Ireland, who is greeted as if he were a visiting head of government, met with John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor, the president of Ghana.

Bono considers the high-level meetings a necessity. But he prefers to approach the problem at the ground level. “Who here is going to school?” Bono asked Nigerian kids during the trip. As their hands rise, the rock star has made a connection with them.

It's important to remember, in this land of old and new, where we saw a village elder — a member of the local school PTA — who brought his electronic PDA to a meeting in Nigeria, most Africans don't know who Bono is. They just know that he's out to help them by raising billions, along with awareness.

“Look at these kids,” Bono insists to NBC’s camera crews. “Come on over here! Look how royal they are — the most beautiful kids on earth!”

Bono says, over and over, “This is what it's all about, in microcosm, right here.”

The people who are already part of the struggle — part of the daily effort in Africa — have instantly allied themselves with Bono.

"It's not charity, it's just an investment in the future of the developing world,” says Richard Feachem, the executive director of Global Fund, an organization dedicated to fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. “It's a kind of tough love."

“It will give us hope,” says village nurse Hannah Ndabi, “as well as people in the community, that somebody is coming to see our needs and maybe support us in the near future.”

“The story we need to communicate is what Africa is doing for itself. And because Africa is sick of aid, they don't want aid,” Bono says. “They need aid in this moment of their development, but actually what they really want to do is trade.”

Because a life in rock music has been very good to this man who grew up in lower middle-class Ireland, he says now it is his turn to go after TB, malaria, HIV and poverty — while there is time.

“We have written off the continent of Africa, and history will not be kind to us for that,” he says. “God will not let us do that. These people — their lives — before God, are as valuable as yours and my children.”

Bono And The Christian Right

                The members of the Irish rock band U2 have always believed that their group was about something more than making records and playing concerts.

The themes of their music, often about social injustice, ranging from the American civil rights movement to genocide in Bosnia, have helped them sell more than 130 million albums around the world and gross nearly a billion dollars on the concert trail. And offstage, their lead singer, known by his teenage nickname "Bono," is equally impressive. His political activism, working to help erase Third World debt and supplying Africa with AIDS drugs, has made him a political force.

Correspondent Ed Bradley takes a look at U2 and the double life of their lead singer.

After 25 years of touring, most critics say U2 is as good today as they’ve ever been, still selling out some of the world’s largest stadiums and arenas when touring around the globe.

"It's only rock and roll where people are burned out at 40. I want to see what can happen with a band if they keep their integrity, keep their commitment to each other, and can we create extraordinary music," says Bono, speaking to 60 Minutes while on tour in Milan, Italy this past summer.

"You know what would have happened – and I'm not making a comparison, because I don't feel worthy to touch their hem – but what would have happened if the Beatles lived, and didn't, you know, disappear up their own arses but actually stayed in contact with the world, were awake. Didn't let their money buy them off. You know I'm still hungry. I still want a lot out of music," Bono says.

Bono has said when fans are screaming, it's not about the band, it's about them. "It's unexplainable what a song means to you. Because, remember, songs, it's not like a movie you see once or twice. A song, it gets under your skin and that's why [we] abandon ourselves to it," says Bono. "It has a sense of kind of uplift, of getting airborne."

"Everything feels possible. And maybe more things are possible than we think," he adds.

And at every concert, the band tries to make that happen. Before the show, fans are asked to join a campaign to help end world poverty. And during the performance, Bono sings of social justice and argues for religious harmony.

Bono’s passions are shared and supported by the band, drummer Larry Mullen, Jr., bassist Adam Clayton and the guitarist who calls himself "The Edge."

"I think early on the heroes that we had were people like Bob Marley, John Lennon, The Clash," says The Edge. "And those bands all had the same combination of rock 'n roll, the rage, railing against injustice. And the politics. We connected with that in a major way."

The four of them formed their bond and their politics as teenagers in Dublin, Ireland. Larry Mullen wanted to start a band to play in pubs. Instead, he got one intent to take on the world.

Mullen says being Irish helped shape the bands' political and social concerns. "I mean we lived all our lives with the terrorist situation in northern Ireland. And with the British army and seeing that on the news night after night, atrocity after atrocity," he says. "But more than anything else, for the British folks Irish people were all terrorists. So when we went to Britain, it was always a lot of resistance to U2. And that's why we came to America."

In 1980, American music fans embraced them. By 1987, following their masterwork album "The Joshua Tree," critics began to call them the biggest rock band in the world. Tours and CDs since then, including their latest, have added to their popularity.

But along the way, they found another calling: getting help to the starving, troubled continent of Africa. The band did their part at the 1985 Live Aid concert.

Bono continued on, behind the scenes and in front of news cameras, to lobby world leaders to action.

Bono once said, "I'm available to be used, but I'm not a cheap date." And he stands by that quote. "No, I'm not a cheap date. I'm in the checks business. You know, and not just people signing the checks, but people cashing them. And I'm ready to spend my, whatever you want to call it, the currency of my celebrity, if that’s what it takes to get there."

He gets a lot of credit for lobbying President Bush, who he has met several times. Today, the Bush administration contributes to one of his biggest causes, AIDS medication for Africa.

"People openly laughed in my face when I suggested that this administration would distribute antiretroviral drugs to Africa," Bono remembers. "They said, 'You are out of your tiny mind.' There's 200,000 Africans now who owe their lives to America."

How does he get support for his projects? "It was probably that it would be really wrong beating a sort of left-wing drum, taking the usual bleeding-heart-liberal line," says Bono.

Instead, he enlisted the ruling right of American politics.

"Particularly conservative Christians, I was very angry that they were not involved more in the AIDS emergency. I was saying, 'This is the leprosy that we read about in the New Testament, you know. Christ hung out with the lepers. But you're ignoring the AIDS emergency,'" says Bono. "How can you? And, you know, they said, 'Well, you're right, actually. We have been. And we're sorry. We'll get involved.' And they did."

His proudest achievement may have been helping convince the G8 industrial nations to sign an agreement that will forgive more than $40 billion in loans to Third World countries, 18 of them so far.

"And these countries, instead of paying that money servicing old debts, can spend it on health, education and infrastructure in the countries. It's an amazing achievement," says Bono.

But for all his success as an activist, Bono remains a rock star at the core.

He and the rest of the band members have vacation homes in the South of France, the epicenter of celebrity lifestyle.

How did he end up in the South of Frances, as opposed to Italy or Spain?

"There's been, always been, an Irish/French thing going back to what's called the Flight of Earls. And in the 19th century. So, they're very tolerant of loud Irish people here, as you can see," says Bono laughing. "As you can see I like to keep a low profile," he adds.

Fact is, Bono's celebrity profile could hardly be bigger. Rock star sunglasses aside, he dispenses with it as much as possible.

Bono doesn't travel with security and doesn't have a posse. "I've always, you know, our thing, and being in U2, is like, how do you be, but not have to have all that b******t that goes with being famous and so, answer number one, live in Ireland. Ok? That helped," says Bono.

Bono also jokes about keeping his low profile in the South of France. "Why live in France? Because the French are so snobbish…. The French are so into themselves that they don't even notice you."
Truth is, Bono and the band are treated like royalty on the French Riviera and spend as much time there as possible.

On tour last summer, they commuted to many of their European concerts from the South of France in a private jet.

Poking fun at themselves is something they do well, and often. At the height of their early fame almost 20 years ago, Frank Sinatra joined in at one of his Las Vegas concerts.

"During the show, he stood up, he stopped us and made us kind of stand up and do the wave thing. And we were dressed in, you know, rags, just in comparison," remembers Bono. "And he just stopped. He said, 'You're number one all around the world.' He said, 'Look at you. You haven't spent a dime on your clothes.'"

Today, they do spend millions on their concert production. Every detail of their sets is state-of-the-art, even a cappuccino machine under the stage.

And the attention to detail goes for the music, too. The band gets a lot out of their instruments. Part of their secret is guitar technology.

"It's like a programmable switching system. So I can go through any combination of effects," explains The Edge.

But Larry Mullen makes his job as simple as possible. He doesn’t do big drum solos. "It's fairly simple and straightforward. But because of my…I'm not that good. And I concentrate quite hard," he says, laughing.

Mullen and Clayton focus on creating the engine that drives the music. Bono and Edge are the navigators, trying to take each song and each concert to new heights, every night.

This is where the band's two worlds collide. Their global fame has given Bono a political voice. U2’s politics give their music a little something extra.

And Bono is confident U2's music will be remembered in the future.

"Actually oddly enough, I think my work, the activism, will be forgotten. And I hope it will. Because I hope those problems will have gone away," says Bono. "But our music will be here in 50 years and 100 years' time. Fact that our songs occupy a sort of an emotional terrain that didn't exist before our group did."

Bono's Charity Starts Podcasts

Bono, U2 frontman’s social awareness group launches a monthly audio series on World AIDS day, writes Red Herring. The podcast, published every Thursday, intends to extend the charity’s anti-poverty message to trendsetters through a series of podcasts to commemorate World AIDS day.<br>
<br>
“Celebrities will continue to weigh in on issues, while we’ll also [spotlight] people who are working in church basements and on college campuses to get people to help,” says Meighan Stone of ONE.org.<br>
<br>
Independent publishers, business of all sizes including home businesses and corporations have begun to use podcast as a tool to market themselves. Now the technology has been used for charitable purposes.<br>
<br>
I am not by all means surprised by this news, podcasting should have been used in many more applications and busineses. Just that I can’t keep the excitement for myself.<br>

Bono paints for charity

                You remember your art classes at primary school where you had your mini easel and those poster paints? When you thought a single blue line at the top of the page and a green one at the bottom would constitute for the sky and the grass? Then a red square with a squiffy triangle on top in-between two lumps of cauliflower green smudges on a brown line showed a house and two trees? Well imagine a grown man doing this in black paint portraying an image of himself under the name 'Peter' and a wolf symbolizing the devil. Sounds a bit bloody stupid doesn't it? But if your Bono you can just about get away with it.

Rewind to August 2002 and the worlds greatest rock band, U2 reached their UK leg of their Elevation Tour. After playing sell out nights at London's Earls Court, Bono left the venue straight away every night and flew back to Dublin to sleep with his dying father. Leading up his death Bob Hewson (Bono's dad) was helped through his final months from the Irish Hospice Foundation. A year later Bono wanted to give something back to say thanks.

The hospice came up with the idea to ask Bono to draw illustrations for a book based on the children's' novel 'Peter and the Wolf'. The trouble was that they had over 60 pages to fill by one of the busiest men in the world, so they asked Bono if he would sketch a small drawing every time he took a flight. Bono however had a better plan. If he was going to do something, he would do it properly. So he turned up in his painting overal equipped with paint and paper at the home of one of the organizers home and painted all day. With the help of his two daughters, who wanted to show their love for their Granddad, the paintings were finished and would be published in a book from November in Ireland, America, Ireland and the UK.

The auction takes place at New York's' Rockefeller Center on November 21st. Leading up to the date the original paintings have been exhibited in the States, Ireland and are currently on show in the UK at Christie's. We attended the private view attended by The Edge and Dave Stewart and of course Bono. Rock star, Gavin Friday, who helped produce the book, introduced Bono onto a small podium in front of the invited crowd. The U2 star couldn't resist banging the infamous auction hammer to ask for silence after the welcome applause he was given. He told how much the charity meant to him and how he found his love of music through his Granny's piano. He touched the audience hearts explaining his love and loss of his father, only days before he told a British tabloid how he nearly calls him on a regular basis and the sorrow when he realizes that he was no longer there after picking up the phone.

After his speech we joined Bono admiring his own work in the gallery, which he modestly reviews as 'Pretty Good!' Bono can't do nothing wrong and we can exclusively reveal that if plans go according to his wishes he will be hitting the UK with his boys in 2005. Let's just hope he can enjoy the after shows this year.

’American Idol’ to go to Africa, Bono announces at symposium

Here’s a scoop! American Idol will soon go to Africa to become its usual sensation there. This pearl of wisdom dropped from the lips of the one and only Bono.<br>
Asked if he is a fan of America’s hottest TV show and if he watches it, Bono laughed; "No, but I will now!"<br>
The rock king of U2, one of the world’s most active philanthropists, fighting AIDS, poverty and injustice all over the world, was the guest last week at a symposium put together by Time Warner.<br>
The audience was stellar - director/actor Sydney Pollack, stars par excellence such as Robert Duvall, Kevin Bacon, Timothy Hutton, Christine Baranski, Roberta Flack, Jane Seymour, Russell Simmons, Steve Buscemi and Meryl Streep’s "find," the fabled performance artist Sarah Jones of Bridge and Tunnel fame.<br>
Lots of other type "stars" as well - Jonathan Alter, Richard Cohen, Ron Delsener, Kenneth Cole, Maria Cuomo, Campbell Brown, Terry George, Chris Blackwell, Jeff Greenfield, Agnes Gund, Charlie Rose, Jeff Koons, Ray Kelly, David Lauren, Sheila Nevins, Lou Reed, Jeff Bewkes, Rick Stengel, Moby, Billy Norwich, Marshall Rose, Faye Wattleton, Elie Wiesel, Roger Waters, Brian Williams, Sherrie and David Westin of Sesame Workshop and ABC. And many more I didn’t see.<br>

Bono: Sex Talks in Churches are 'Critical' in AIDS Battle

U2 lead singer Bono, left, speaks to the media beside Congresswoman Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, center, and Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums, Friday, March 2, 2007, in Oakland, Calif. Lee welcomed the rock star and international AIDS activist to Oakland to learn about how the global HIV/AIDS epidemic is impacting the African American community in the United States and the efforts being made to stop the disease. Lee, Bono, and Dellums participated in a roundtable discussion with local faith leaders on the role of the faith community in helping fight the disease. <br>
The singer met last Friday with clergy, non-profit groups and people infected with HIV at Allen Temple Baptist Church in East Oakland, noting the disproportionate amount of black people affected with AIDS in the region. <br>
"We're at the epicenter here in East Oakland of a new rise of the AIDS epidemic in the United States," Bono noted, according to the Kaiser Network, "But I'd also say we're also at the epicenter of the resistance to that epidemic." <br>

Danny Schechter: An Open Letter To Bono Re: Debt Relief

The News Dissector has a request for your upcoming special edition of Vanity Fair: Link the growing debt burden of Americas and the better-known debt problems in Africa.<br>
<br>
<br>
Bono is in the news. (When is he not?) This time, the world's great rocker is being named to edit a special edition of the Vanity Fair, the gliteratti magazine that influences our national buzz machine and cultural zeitgeist. One of his stated missions is to offer compelling non-stereotyped stories about the fight against AIDS and for debt relief in Africa that compassion fatigued Americans will tune in to.<br>
<br>
<br>
As he reaches out to touch an American nerve, I am reaching out to touch his. I am doing so in the spirit of Nelson Mandela, with whom I did five films, and who once surprised me at a press event by staring right at me and asking - with a big smile - "Remember Me?" I know Bono remembers me. In fact we were both at Mandela's big anti-AIDS concert in Cape Town some years back. I was filming it; he was starring in it. We had a long talk.<br>

Bono on the Run to Tackle AIDS and Poverty

Bono accepts at the chairman's award at the 38th NAACP Image Awards, Friday 2 March, 2007, in Los Angeles.<br>
(AP Photo/Chris Carlson)<br>
U2's Bono recently called Oakland's black community in California the 'epicentre' of a new wave of AIDS infections. <br>
"I'm a spoiled-rotten rock star, I know that, but I have a loud hailer and I'm going to use it," the frontman for U2 told reporters at a news conference after two hours of closed-door meetings at Allen Temple Baptist Church. "I've come as a student, really." <br>
The 46-year-old Irish musician - renowned for his work on international debt relief and HIV, particularly in Africa - visited Oakland at the request of Democratic Representative for Oakland Barbara Lee. She said Friday's event was "another attempt to break the silence with regards to this global HIV pandemic", which affects African-Americans disproportionately in the US. <br>
"We're at the epicentre here in East Oakland of a new rise of the AIDS epidemic in the United States," said Bono. "But I'd also say we're also at the epicentre of the resistance to that epidemic<br><br>
