While watching the Oprah Winfrey Show and seeing women donating their hair to help make wigs for cancer patients, Victoria Bartlett, a Grade 4 student at Coldwater Public School, decided she wanted to help give people a new head of hair as well. "I've seen a lot of people do it and I thought it would be nice to do, to help people get hair," Bartlett said. "They (cancer patients) can't grow their hair back, but I can."
The event was announced in October to give participants enough time to grow out their hair, to the required eight inches.
Oprah Winfrey talks about 'her girls'

It's a big day for Oprah Winfrey, whose hour-long special on her school in South Africa airs on ABC7 at 9 p.m.
After 5 years and $40 million of her own money, she says the school seemed like a dream until she watched her special.
"The actual opening day I the pink dress with the pink diamonds and the girls I felt like people say they feel on their wedding day I really literally at the end of the day felt I got married 152 times," said Oprah.

One hundred and fifty-two students attend the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. It's now a reality for this talk show host and philanthropist. She keeps in touch with them via satellite and by watching her primetime special.
Oprah hopes the special will spark a desire in this country for higher education.
"When other kids in this country see those little girls just hungry for an education, see those little girls saying I know I can make it if I get a chance to have an education, I think it's inspiring. And, it makes kids here think differently about maybe going to school or doing my homework," said Oprah.
Nigeria: Fragments - the Oprah Winfrey Challenge

The famous American talk show host, Oprah Winifrey opened a school for girls in South Africa to help the less privileged in early January.Eventhough, according to reports the idea for the school was born in 2000 at a meeting between Oprah Winfrey and Nelson Mandela, where she said she decided to build the academy in South Africa rather than the United States out of love and respect for Mandela and because of her own African roots, such a noble deed should be a food for thought to the wealthy in African countries.

The students chosen for admission to the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls will be those that are academically talented and exhibits leadership skills in their community, but whose families cannot support their educations says another report, adding that many of the students come from families affected by HIV\AIDS.

Oprah's mission-to give hope to children in South Africa. How her dream became 21 days, 50,000 children and a million moments of happiness.
"My life was dramatically changed last Christmas when I went to South Africa on a mission to bring Christmas joy to 50,000 children. I realized in those moments why I was born, why I am not married and do not have children of my own. These are my children. I made a decision to be a voice for those children, to empower them, to help educate them, so the spirit that burns alive inside each of them does not die." — Oprah

Building Oprah Katrina Homes

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Oprah asked her viewers to open their hearts—and they did. As of September 2006, donations to the Oprah Angel Network Katrina registry total more than $11 million. Homes have been built in four states—Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama—before the one year anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Our hopes and prayers are with the millions of families touched by this terrible tragedy. "Now," says Oprah, "It is the outpouring of intense compassion, the yearning to help strangers across the globe that is truly, I believe, more powerful than any tsunami. Together, if we choose to be, we all can be the ultimate force of nature."

Hundreds of thousands of children affected by Hurricane Katrina lost everything, including their precious books. See how Oprah's Angel Network and First Book's Book Relief program are putting new books into the hands of America's smallest survivors.

There's so much more to do! The new Habitat neighborhoods still need playgrounds, community centers and landscaping to make the new communities feel like home. To donate, visit the Oprah Katrina Homes Registry today.
While in the Gulf States to report on the Katrina catastrophe, Oprah pledged to the survivors that she would not forget them—and she's keeping that promise in a big way. "I am personally today committing $10 million of my own money toward the rebuilding of peoples' lives."

"You can buy a toaster," Oprah says, "or [sponsor the building of] a whole house! I want everybody to give at the level that they can."

Oprah Winfrey has enlisted famous friends including Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Jamie Foxx to help her bring hope to those devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
And she took a few famous faces with her - Foxx helped serve up food to 5,000 hurricane victims in a shelter in Dallas, Texas, while Matthew McConaughey and Faith Hill brought joy to survivors in Zachary, Louisiana, and Gulfport, Mississippi respectively in a show that aired in America yesterday. Meanwhile, Winfrey's pals John Travolta, Lisa Marie Presley and Chris Rock joined Roberts for segments taped for today's show. Travolta piloted his private plane to shelters in the southeast, delivering much needed vaccines and helping to replenish medical supplies. A tearful Winfrey hosted yesterday's show from the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, where thousands of hurricane survivors are seeking temporary refuge and medical help
